Over one year ago i installed luxury vinyl tile directly over pre existing ceramic tile flooring. It can provide a smooth even surface under the vinyl which will allow it to be smooth and tightly sealed. The trouble is that thinset generally requires a textured surface to bond at. The best candidate is fully adhered glued down sheet vinyl flooring.

Fortunately ceramic tile is often a suitable surface on which install vinyl planks. The ceramic tile must be in good shape without cracks or large gashes.
